  3. I absolutely loved this book and the real examples. That is what makes this book different -- the real examples make me want to travel to all these schools and learn -- as a teacher and as a student. The book study integrated with Ted Talks was a great mix and kept me engaged in different ways. Love the self-pace. Thank you. Yes, I would recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. It pushed me to think about teaching differently and reevaulate some of the things that I do in my classroom to make them better and more meaningful. Love the self-pace because I am an all in person and just like to crank stuff out. I would definitely recommend this book to my colleagues.

  7. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the accompanying course. It has made me think more deeply about education -- specifically what we are offering to the children and what we expect of them today. The content challenged me and encouraged me to see these issues from a new perspective. I have already discussed it with both educators and parents, as it has sparked meaningful conversations into how all children learn and grow differently, I feel that we are seeing more and more behaviors with our cookie-cutter approach in education and need to make changes-- before high school. I would definitely recommend this book and this course to others.

  8. Overall, I found this course and the book What School Could Be by Ted Dintersmith to be very thought-provoking. I appreciated how the book shared real examples of innovative schools and teachers across the country. It was encouraging to read about educators who are helping students learn through projects, creativity, and real-world problem solving rather than focusing only on tests and memorization. The stories helped me think about how schools can better develop students’ curiosity, independence, and critical thinking skills.
One thing I especially liked about the course was how it pushed me to reflect on my own teaching practices and consider ways to make learning more meaningful for students. The different TED Talks and examples throughout the book helped reinforce the idea that education should focus on helping students reach their full potential, not just preparing them for standardized tests.
One challenge for me was that some of the ideas in the book feel difficult to implement within the structure of traditional schools, where curriculum requirements and testing expectations still play a large role. While the examples were inspiring, it sometimes felt hard to see how those changes could happen in every classroom.
Overall, I would recommend this book study to a colleague. It encourages educators to rethink the purpose of education and consider how we can create learning environments that are more engaging, relevant, and supportive for students. Even if not every idea can be implemented immediately, the book provides valuable inspiration and encourages important conversations about the future of education.

  11. Please post your thoughts about this course below. What did you like about it? What didn’t you like about it? Would you recommend this book study to a colleague? I enjoyed the book study and learning how other teachers in all areas are learning to connect with their students to make learning more engaging and exciting for them. I did get discouraged when reading this book though knowing that we are giving these standardized tests to students so many teachers just try to teach to the test thinking that is the way to teach. We need more teachers to teach outside of the box. Students need to have more hands on experience and a chance to explore all areas of education. I hope that one day states will not put such emphasis on standardized tests.

  13. Enjoyed the book. There is more to schools and teaching than testing and memorizing information. We need to develop the whole child.

I teach in a small private school, and many of the challenges shared in the stories were a bit of an eye-opener to me. I'm thankful to that I have a lot of freedom in my instruction, and my teaching is not being dictated by standardized testing. I'm not in fear of losing my job based on test scores. My world of teaching is very sheltered. I applaud the many teachers who make a difference in the lives of students across the US each day.
I didn't like reading how standardized tests dictate the focus of classroom instruction in so many schools. Teachers teach unique students. Meeting their needs should be our focus.
Yes, I would recommend this book to my colleagues.
